Analysis of real media products-Music videos

After coming to know that one of the options I have as an A2 student for my Media Coursework is making a music video, I decided to explore the codes and conventions which such products follow. Here is the research I did in the amount if time I had been provided:

1-Styles of Music Video:
  • Performance- Bands/Artists shown playing
  • Narrative- A story included
  • Mixture- Containing both a performance and a narrative
  • Cameo-Band/Artists appears in the video, but doesn't perform
  • Animation

2-Camera:

  • Shots depend on the style chosen.
  • Close-ups of performance, along with Extreme close-ups of the performer/performers' lips, their instruments and various other objects in the video to signify as to what's happening.
  • Crane shots- showing the stage or area where the band/artist is performing.
  • Low-angled shots.
  • Distant shots or extreme distant shots.
  • Panning-camera moving from one performer to the other.
  • Tracking.

3-Editing and Sound:

  • Music videos usually feature jump cutting in which two sequential shots of a particular subject are shown.
  • Footage is to be edited in order to match the music.
  • Split screens/CGI.
  • Diegetic sound (Again, depends on the style of the music video).
  • Varying sound levels.

4-Mise-en-Scene:

  • Depends on the genre of music and type of music video.
  • Props-instruments, other band equipment, etc.
  • Costumes- Outfits for the band/artist.
  • Locations- Concert halls, streets, rooftops, etc.
