Final Product- Music Video for the song 'Yaad Aya Youn'

Website for Iris-my Band

I decided to use freewebs.com for making the website for my band, since it s both simple to use, as well as user-friendly. Also, it has a variety of themes available for choosing an effective background for music-related sites, which is why I resolved to use it. Here is the link:

http://mohsinmusicvideo.webs.com/

I intend to present a detailed background on the band, and help the audience identify by elaborating on their musical influences, and keeping them posted about what they have in store for them. From time-to-time, their compositions will be uploaded, and through this medium, the band will be in constant touch with the audience. Also, their various products like T-Shirts, current band logo, guitars, and upcoming albums will also be talked about. They will also have their own personal blog on the site to discuss ideas for new compositions and share their views about music. Also, I plan to announce their upcoming tour on the website as well.

Altering the shooting strategy, and theme for my music video

I realized after going through the research, and planning of my yet-to-be final media product, that due to the use of a narrative style, it wouldn't fare well as a promo for my band. So, having understood that I decided to make the band as the the characters of my video in order to ensure that the audience are effectively introduced to both them, as well as manage to identify the genre (which in this case is Pop) so as to understand the boundaries as constructed by the band, and ensure for the target audience (pop lovers) the type of music they wish to compose later, which the audience might search for later, should they find the band's music as worth listening to.

Given that the language used in my band's song is Urdu, I deemed it necessary to explore the promos of influential Pakistani Pop bands like Jal, for instance. After replacing their vocalist Atif Aslam in 2003 with Farhan Saeed, they felt it best to promote their band's name, and highlight the changes the band underwent.

This is the famed music video of 'Aadat', which was recorded with Atif being the main vocalist:

This video, although it relies mainly on a narrative style also features the main band members in a brief scene, and shows the then vocalist Atif singing, with Gohar Mumtaz-guitarist for the band playing in the background. But, after Atif left the band, Goher edited the video to promote the new vocalist Farhan Saeed, and in order to ensure yet again that the audience is able to recognize the band, they have also shown a scene in which a poster of the band is shown, with the addition of the new vocalist. Here is the Farhan Saeed version of Aadat:

With that, I decided ultimately to make my band as the characters of the music video as well. But, instead of showing them for a brief scene, I intend to show them throughout the video since I feel the need to increase awareness of the both the band' s genre as well as their musical talent, which owing to the high competition in the music industry might go unnoticed.

Evaluations Q4

Q4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?

A: I used several technological means during every step towards the production of my media product, and the final presentation of it. The initial step I took was to first ensure that I had the best possible video camera for ensuring optimum quality in the shots. And so, I borrowed my friend s HD one:- JVC GZ-HM445 Model, with  framesize (1920x1080), and its compact size, as compared to Hi8 or DV cams proved to be more user-friendly when it came to taking handheld shots for my video. Furthermore, it had some very interesting features, which if used properly could add a bit of effect to the shots being taken. Its colors were quite natural, as well as sufficiently bright, and also recorded audio rather effectively, and properly:

After the shots were taken, it was time to move on with editing, and that's where the option to use Adobe Premiere was provided by our teacher, and served to be a useful software for ensuring optimum results in the presentation of my music video. While sound didn't need to be edited, given that I was using a song, and had to put it in sync with the video accordingly, but the shots had to be brought in sync with it, and matching the pace of the shots with the steady rhythm progression of the song, it was necessary to ensure that the shots were edited in a manner, which progressed in accordance with the song being played, and hence manage to create a visual impact on the audience. Since the song's progression was slow, the shots needed to progress in a slow-paced manner as well, and for that the slow motion effect proved to be quite useful. Also, the obvious need to cut or trim unnecessary shots was recognized, and with various options to do so unlike the limited choice offered by basic editing software like Movie Maker. The PC I used was already available in the Media Lab, and I relied solely on it during all the editing sessions since my own laptop proved to be inadequate for such heavy type of editing.

Being an independent worker, I didn't need to rely on communication since my availability was all that was needed. However, at certain points when confused as to how to proceed with the production of my product, I did establish contact with my practical media teacher and get my issues heard, as well as resolved. Also, contacting my actors for shooting sessions was made easy through the usage of SMS on mobile, and chat boxes on FaceBook. Correspondence through emails, when gathering vital information regarding my project composed as significant documents and images was also established, and facilitated the steady progression of my coursework:

Used Gmail for emailing teacher, and actors, and receiving useful input on my Coursework as well

Facebook- came in handy for being in touch with the actors

As for the Research stage, I used Google to my advantage, and was able to research on similar media products, ancillaries, and institutions, and audiences for my media product through it. Wikipedia, and other relevant sites like Warner Music Group's official website aided me in my research for institutions, and audiences. On YouTube, I browsed through similar media products in order to understand the technicalities involved in producing my product. With YouTube, I also managed to find some very useful tutorials to help understand Adobe Photoshop better, which I used to make my ancillaries.

As for Planning, most of it was text-based like Scene Divisioning, and Shot Divisioning so I used Microsoft Word for composing them, and then posted them on Blog to show my research and planning for my media product.

Evaluations were done as written texts on the Blog, using images from Google, and other specified sources.

Evaluations Q3

Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

A: Before dishing out the experience I gleaned from my post-production feedback, it is essential to first highlight the audience feedback I received during my product's pre-production stage, which is necessary for explaining as to how this feedback helped me in making the product according to their tastes, and preferences so as to ensure maximum viewership on their part.

Here is what I learnt about my product during the pre-production stage:

As it can be observed, the results of my questionnaire helped me obtain valuable feedback as to which genre was preferred by my target audience, which if used would be enjoyed immensely by them. This helped me choose the popular genre, and in this case it was between 'rock and 'pop', and I chose pop after taking my research on audiences a step further, and looked at how influential pop singers like the late Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga are.

Also, even before using this formal questionnaire, I used Facebook to gather reviews on the pop songs I uploaded on my page so as to see if they are met with a positive response or not. Here, you may find some of these informal-type of reviews.

So, during the pre-production stage I realised that there were a lot of ways to conduct surveys-both formal and informal, and which of these methods were preferred by the audience so as to ensure that they feel comfortable, and satisfied with the procedure of gathering their reviews. After using Facebook, I used SurveyMonkey, which as a proper site for forming both formal as well as informal questionnaires to facilitate research of a significant matter. After viewing the results of my online questionnaire, I realised the need of adding a variety of choices for the audience to pick from along with a good distribution of both mcqs as well as those for producing brief written answers so as to make it easier for me to have an extensive look at their tastes and preferences, and hence produce a music video, which is find likeable by the majority. With the help of their reviews, not only did I gain insight into the personal reasons my audience had for liking a particular genre, but also other reasons as well. Also, I was able to ensure that my making a music video would be considered as acceptable by theme since I was the only one amongst my batch to plan on making one. So, it helped make my resolve more stronger, and also look as a rational decision based on empirical research, and analysis of my target audience.

After this, comes the post-production stage for which I designed a questionnaire, which aimed to address the many aspects-technical, emotional, etc of the film so as to check whether they can be improved upon or not. So that once the final touches are put, there are no more issues with the video. This was the questionnaire:

Here are some of the sample answers:

After looking at these I learned that as an audience they had felt the presence of some minor technical flaws, and had issues with there being no female in the video, hence making it look sexist. This was unchangeable, given that I did not have much time left, and that due to a lady actor being unavailable I had to resort to using male actors instead.

However, as far as subtitles were concerned, they had felt the need of adding them for a better understanding of the song via its lyrics so I realized the significance of subtitling my film.

Evaluations Q2

Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

A: First of all, it is necessary to establish the fact that I did not make my ancillaries before working on my main product. They were made in order to promote my product, and hence ensure that the audience was able to get a more better idea about my band Iris, and hence develop an interest by understanding the fundamental principles this band was functioning upon like the type of music they wish to make, and what other songs they have in store for them.

http://mohsinmusicvideo.webs.com/

So, starting with the website since it's the platform for ensuring the promotion of my product by a much proper presentation, and promotion of my ancillary products, it should be well-understood that through a website, a band  can keep their particular audience updated, and can use the many features present for facilitating their work, such as posting the compositions they wish to build upon, and also receive extensive audience feedback for several purposes like knowing what their audience expects from them, and how they can cater to those needs. On my band's website, features like the 'About us' section aid the band in narrating their background as musicians to the audience, and hence establish their credibility and passion for the work they wish to proceed with. Also, the 'Blog' option helps my band to regularly update their site by voicing their personal thoughts, and opinions regarding either their professional life as musicians, or comments on the bands they are influenced by, and what they have in store for the audience. Also, it helps maintain a friendly image, which is vital for ensuring the audience' support through and through, and can also be used to express gratitude in a more admirable manner to their followers/fans.

The 'Photo Gallery' gives a visual representation of the band's ideas, and also helps the audience understand their background, and the significance of their encounters in day-to-day life more properly. Also, these pictures also serve a commercial purpose since they can be later used by fans through social-networking sites or other online means to further promote the band's name, and help it rise to fame in the highly competitive music industry.

The 'Contact Us' section currently serves a professional purpose for other bands and people, who wish to work with my band, and had it not already been working with Warner Music Group, it may have also helped other key music institutions to discover them, and strike a deal with them.

Having the feature of 'Sharing' the posts, and activities displayed on the website with other sites, it also serves a promotional purpose, and can be used to promote the band's name, and at a later stage their merchandise in a more socially appropriate manner.

For the music video especially, all these options help in promoting it as well. Already having stressed on the usefulness of a website to increase the significance given to the band, it was also explained that the product if put on the site can ensure proper audience feedback, which would prove to be useful for the band in order to understand what their audience wants, and expects from them. The song can also be made available for download, and the message can be explained, should the audience request the band to do so. Furthermore, any merchandise associated with the product like signed t-shirts during an on-stage performance of the song, can also be distributed  by making them available online. Also, should the fans wish to make a fan-based video, and wish to receive the band's views on it, that could be done as well. And, artists who wish to re-mix it or do a cover can also seek the permission by getting in contact with the band through this website.

What's interesting is that thertwo ancillaries-CD cover and magazine advert also facilitate the promotion of the band just like the website does, and can be also be displayed on the site for that purpose. The CD cover attracts the audience, and briefs them on the entire contents of the album, which also contains the main song of the album. Looking at the CD I've designed, one can see that the entire list of the album has been given and when made available in stores can be bought by fans, who wish to listen to their songs, and also be used to promote their name by making it available for consumption in stores so as to ensure that music-lovers can be subjected to it.

Attractive CD design to be distributed to stores for consumption by the audience

As for the magazine, by featuring the band in it would help it gain international fame, and generate reviews from proper critics along with the target audience. The circulation of the magazine globally, and with material on well-known musicians, it will increase the significance of the band since they would be featured with those famous musicians, and be given the same amount of exposure in print, which would be beneficial for making them known to world, and hence help in extending their audience:

Evaluations Q1

Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?

A: My product, which is a pop music video uses a narrative style, since it is established as a story, and therefore tries to highlight the meaning of the song, in a more broadly-defined manner. Being a promo, however, it was deemed necessary by me to keep the band members, as the characters of this story in order to ensure that the audience managed to effectively identify them as the ones responsible for making the composition, should they find it enjoyable, and hence wish to become their fan/follower in which case knowing about the band to a quite an extent would be necessary.

So, as far as promotional music videos are concerned, I did not violate the convention of using the band members as part of the video to signify the point that the song was composed by them, and make their name known to the target audience, which would be significant for both increasing awareness of the band, as well as building a base for fans, and help them progress with this.

For example; Chris Daughtry-the main vocalist for the band Daughtry used his last name for it so that the audience, which was already aware of his vocal talent, owing to the fact that he had risen to fame in a popular singing contest American Idol in 2005, would recognize him, and having taken a certain liking to his type of music would therefore be interested in following him as he uses his talent as a singer, as well as an excellent rhythm-guitar player for making music which they would love listening to. Daughtry's first hit single, 'It's Not Over' featured both the band members as well as him in the video, like a conventional promo. In the video, both the narrative as well as the performance style was used, since there was a story, and the band was featured as well. Here is the video:

The same case is with my video, which although is limited, tries to promote the band by starring them as the main characters, and like Daughtry the main vocalist of my band remains a constant throughout the video, and is united for a brief scene with his lead guitarist so as to further stress on the fact that these two belong to the band, which is responsible for making the song, and make it easier for them to follow the band, should they wish to do so. Here is one of those scenes in which Faraz-the main vocalist as well as the rhythm guitarist acts as the main protagonist of the story:

And here is the scene in which he is joined with his bandmate Saad:

With that, it can be hence concluded that as far as the conventions of a promo are concerned, with the main one being the need to feature the band to be promoted to some extent has been followed by me. Moving towards the conventions of pop songs, it should be observed  that many of the significant elements needed for a pop song are there. I shall deal with these conventions in a categorical manner, with a comparative analysis of a famous pop song similar to my media product:

1-Sound: It is essential for the vocals in a pop song to sound more prominent when compared to that of other instrumentals being played. For example, lets take 'Aadat', a famous pop song by a Pakistani Band called Jal. In Aadat, the vocals sound very dominant, and the power of these vocals helps in expressing the strong emotions, which are necessary to signify the mood, and in turn represent the genre of the song effectively. This is also the case with my music video, in which it is ensured that the vocals dominate over the entire song. and sound clear and loud enough to create that much-needed visual impact for the target audience.

2-Mise-en-Scene: The establishment, in which my video has been shot helps in representing the conflict between the feelings of the protagonist, and those surrounding him, and show the effect of these situational variables on the protagonist's behaviour as exhibited in the video to further signify the entire mood, as well as the message of the song, which deals with loss, and how that loss is highlighted by memories shared in a particular place, which serves as an 'obvious' sign for the audience that the person feels the absence of his friend, when looking around the place, with the most memories as shared by them. Same is the case in Aadat, in which the person sits in a place which reminds him of the troubled past he has gone through, and how it haunts him, and triggers the strong pangs of sorrow and despair within.

3-Camera Angles: In my video, there are a lot of close-ups, extreme close-ups, mid-shots, and the usual distant shots. The varying nature of these shots, is done to fully show the character, and place great emphasis on his mood and the behaviour as followed in order to help the audience identify with its mood, and in turn the genre. The same can be observed in Aadat, in which these camera angles vary with each scene to effectively establish the meaning of the song by showing both the characters as well as the surrounding as much as possible, and helping the audience comprehend it in a more proper manner.

Close-Up

Distant Shot

Close-up+Side Shot

4-Editing: In music videos, a lot of jump cuts, and in pop songs like mine effects like 'Fade' are used so as to manipulate time, since music videos given their short duration, as well as the gravity of their message need to be edited in a manner, which helps the audience move on, and come in visual, as well as an audio contact with the entire song by going through only the scenes, which are relevant and in-sync with the song. Also, the shots have been edited in a slow-paced manner to bring in a gloomy depressing effect, which is needed for explaining the theme of the song properly. So, like many such music videos, I used the slow-motion effect to my advantage. Again, the same can be observed in Aadat, in which the shots are slow-paced and time has been manipulated by using the same effects I did for my product.

That being said, it is clear that I didn't challenge the conventions of real media products, and did so because I wanted to make it easier for my target audience to identify the genre, and hence understand the song through the music video.

Location Shots

'

The location I've chosen for my music video is my school, and this is simply because of the fact that the protagonist of my story formed a strong bond of friendship with a significant someone here, and therefore this place reminds him about the times they shared together, which further intensifies the sorrow held within him. It is essential to note that I've chosen only the exterior of the school, rather than the interior, since by expanding my surroundings, I can expose my protagonist to a series of situational variables, which would help in a more effective dramatic representation of his thoughts, and feelings. Initially, he will be shown sitting on a school bench, with the entire playground in focus so as to place emphasis on his loneliness, and  how it pains him to see everyone except him in a happy mood, when he has nothing really to be happy about.

Character Sketches

Faraz Hussain-Protagonist

Faraz, is the protagonist of my music video, and the very reason I chose him for this was because he looks both like a rockstar as well as the depressed type, thanks to his long black hair, which does well to shroud his eyes so as to indicate that he doesn't wish any intensive social contact with anyone in his surroundings. In the video, he sits in a sullen mood, mourning constantly about his particular loss-that being his late friend, and the happy surroundings keep reminding him of that matter. In the end, however, he understands that his friend is not going to come back, but he must move on with his life, and so stops troubling himself to such a great magnitude.

Faraz scanning his surroundings in a dejected manner

Saad Tariq-Artist/Bandmate

Saad Tariq is a member of the band being promoted-which is Iris. Both a rhythm as well as a lead guitarist for the band, he is featured in the music video in order to signify both his role in the band, as well as in the music video. He acts as an hallucination of the protagonist, who feels that he can sense his presence. Both, however, act as if they can't see each other, since they belong to two separate worlds- reality and fantasy. In the end, both Saad and Faraz disappear, a clear indication that both their souls have moved on. In Faraz' case, he has moved on with his life and made new friends, and has stopped regressing about his past. In Saad's case, he has left this world for heaven, and beyond.
